How Long After Hitting Your Head Can Concussion Symptoms Start?
You hit your head, and somehow you feel... fine. Maybe a little rattled, but nothing dramatic. So you shake it off and go about your day.
Then a few hours later, or sometimes a full day or two later, the headache shows up. Or you notice you can't focus on a conversation. Or the lights in your kitchen suddenly feel too bright.
That delay is normal, and it's also exactly why concussions get missed so often. People assume that if something were really wrong, they'd have known immediately. That's not how this works.
The honest timeline
Some people do feel it right away: dizziness, confusion, a headache or pressure that shows up within minutes. But just as often, the real symptoms don't show up until hours later, sometimes not until the next day or two. That delay happens because a concussion isn't just the moment of impact. It can trigger a complex series of changes in how the brain functions, and some symptoms may not become noticeable until hours or even days later.
So if you hit your head and feel okay right now, that doesn't mean you're in the clear. Worth paying attention for the next 24-48 hours regardless of how you feel in the first few minutes.
When this stops being a "watch and wait" situation
Some symptoms mean go to the ER now, not call your chiropractor:
Severe or worsening headache
Repeated vomiting
Seizures
Loss of consciousness, even briefly
Slurred speech
Weakness or numbness in an arm or leg
Real confusion, or not recognizing people you know
If none of those are happening, but you're dealing with the more common stuff (persistent headache, trouble concentrating, irritability, sleep that's suddenly off, a fatigue that doesn't lift), that's where the right care actually matters, not just rest and waiting.
Why timing matters more than people realize
Whether you're three days out from the hit or three weeks past it with symptoms that still haven't faded, timing matters, just differently depending on which one you are. For a recent injury, it's about getting evaluated early instead of waiting it out. For a lingering case, it's about finally getting a real plan instead of more time passing with nothing changing. Either way, we don't ask patients to wait and see before getting checked.
If there are any red flags, you need a medical doctor first, full stop. But once those are ruled out, we often co-manage care directly alongside your physician, addressing the underlying mechanical and neurological pieces while your medical team handles everything else. You don't have to choose between "see a doctor" or "see us." For most patients, it's both, working together.
"Addison Sports Clinic was instrumental in my son's recovery from a concussion he sustained at his high school lacrosse game. It was a scary time but the genuine concern, prompt action and unique treatment protocol put into place as soon as I reached out to Dr. Jason assured me he would make a full recovery. Treatment by the Addison team kept Kaleb's symptoms much more manageable, made his recovery time much faster and reduced the concern for long term effects. I highly recommend reaching out quickly to the clinic in the event of a concussion, time matters."

What we actually do
Our protocol pulls from several tools depending on what you actually need. Chiropractic care addresses neck misalignment that's often making headaches and dizziness worse. FSM calms inflammation and supports nerve function at a cellular level. Soft tissue work releases the neck and shoulder tension that quietly worsens head symptoms. Class 4 laser reduces inflammation and supports healing directly. And BrainTap, which we use to address brainwave activity that's often disrupted after a head injury, particularly for patients dealing with brain fog, poor sleep, or difficulty concentrating after the more visible symptoms have started to fade.
If it's been longer than a month
Many people improve significantly within the first couple of weeks, although recovery time varies. If you're several weeks out and still dealing with symptoms, that's worth a real evaluation. Persistent symptoms deserve an individualized plan rather than simply more waiting
If you or someone you love is dealing with this right now, don't wait until it gets worse to find out what's actually going on.
"I had been suffering from post-concussive symptoms after a motor vehicle collision for almost two years, with my only treatment being medication to manage the symptoms. Dr. Addison introduced me to BrainTap along with the other aspects of his concussion protocol, and it far exceeded my expectations. I went from increasing my medication dosage to completely coming off it, with my headaches and symptoms reduced severely in both frequency and intensity. My only regret was not knowing about these options sooner."
