Why the Most Flexible People Often Feel the Most Tight
The Contradiction Nobody Explains
She bent forward and put her palms flat on the floor without warming up.
Then she sat back up and said, "my whole back is killing me, and I feel completely locked up."
I hear this constantly from hypermobile patients and it never stops being the most counterintuitive thing in the room. The person who is objectively the most flexible person in any yoga class feeling like their body is one giant knot that nothing will loosen.
From the outside it makes no sense. From the inside it is just Tuesday.
Here is why it happens and why understanding it changes everything about how you approach the tightness.
Flexibility and Stability Are Not the Same Thing
Most people assume these two things exist on a sliding scale. More flexible equals looser and more comfortable. Less flexible equals tighter and more restricted.
That is not how it actually works.
Flexibility is how far your joints and tissues can move. Stability is how well your body controls that movement and keeps things where they are supposed to be.
You can have a tremendous amount of the first and almost none of the second. Which is exactly the situation most hypermobile patients are in.
Your joints move further than they are designed to. The connective tissue that is supposed to provide the natural limits on that movement is more lax than average. So, there is nothing reliably keeping things in position when you move.
Your nervous system figured this out a long time ago. And it responded the only logical way it could.
It recruited your muscles to do the job your connective tissue was not doing.
The Muscles Are Not Tight. They Are Working.
This is the reframe that changes everything for most hypermobile patients.
The tension you feel is not your muscles being short or stiff in the way a typical tight muscle is short and stiff. It is your muscles being constantly switched on because they are the structural backup system for a body that needs one.
They are not failing to relax. They are refusing to relax. Because relaxing means the joints they are protecting lose their only reliable stabilizer.
So when you stretch that muscle you get temporary relief. The tension eases for a little while. Then the nervous system notices that the joint it was guarding now has less protection and it fires the muscle right back up.
Not because your body is being difficult. Because it is doing exactly what it learned to do to keep you functional.
Stretching a guarding muscle in a hypermobile body is like turning off a security alarm while the thing it is protecting is still unsecured. The alarm comes right back on. Because the situation has not changed.
Why This Creates Such a Specific Kind of Exhaustion
There is a particular kind of tired that hypermobile patients describe that is hard to explain to someone who has not felt it.
It is not the tired that comes from doing a lot. It is the tired that comes from your body running a constant low grade emergency response just to maintain basic structure throughout the day.
Every position, every movement, every transition requires active muscular stabilization that most people's bodies handle passively through their connective tissue. You are doing manually what most bodies do automatically.
By noon you feel like you ran a marathon. By evening you have no spoons left and you did not even do anything. By the time you lie down to sleep your muscles have been working a full shift and they do not know how to clock out.
The tightness you feel in the morning is not from sleeping wrong. It is from a system that never fully stood down overnight because it does not know how to.
The Things That Make It Worse Without People Realizing
Aggressive stretching. You release the tension temporarily and the body braces harder to compensate. Net result is often more tightness over time not less.
Deep tissue massage that tears through the guarding without addressing why it is there. Feels brutal during, relief for a day, back to baseline or worse by day three.
Being told to just relax. As if the tension is a choice. As if the nervous system running a structural support response is something you can talk yourself out of.
Being given a generic strengthening program that loads joints that are already being held together by muscle tension. Sometimes makes everything angrier because it adds more demand to a system already at capacity.
None of these things are wrong in the right context. In a hypermobile body running constant protective tension, they often miss the point entirely.
What Actually Helps
The goal is not to release the tension. It is to make the tension unnecessary.
When the joints have better support and the nervous system starts getting reliable signals that things are stable enough to ease up slightly, the muscles do not need to guard as constantly. The tightness decreases not because you stretched it away but because the thing driving it changed.
FSM is central to this because it talks to the nervous system directly. It reduces the neural irritation and protective overload that is keeping the guarding dialed up. Patients often describe a specific kind of release after FSM that feels different from massage or stretching. Less like something was forced loose and more like something decided it was okay to let go.
From there stability work that is actually designed for hypermobility. Not generic strengthening. Targeted neuromuscular work that gives the nervous system genuine structural support to trust so it does not have to rely so completely on the muscles to hold everything together.
It is slow. It requires patience. But it addresses the actual problem instead of the symptom of the problem.
