I Know. Just Hear Me Out.
I had a college kid come in a few years back. Tight budget, back was stiff from sitting in class all day, wanted something quick and affordable close to campus.
I listened to what was going on for a few minutes and then told him the truth.
"Honestly? You don't need me. The Joint down the road is probably a better fit for you right now."
He looked at me like I had three heads.
Most doctors don't say that. But I meant every word of it and I'd say it again.
Not Every Back Problem Is a Complex Case and Pretending Otherwise Helps Nobody
Some people wake up stiff. They sit at a desk all day, they don't move enough, and their spine is just grumpy about it. They want to feel better, get adjusted, and get on with their life. No deep evaluation needed. No customized protocol. Just straightforward, affordable, convenient care.
That is a completely legitimate thing to want.
The Joint was built for that patient. Walk in, no appointment, affordable membership, quick and simple. For a significant portion of people who walk through a chiropractic door, that is genuinely all they need. They leave feeling better and come back when they don't. It works.
The problem is not that model existing. The problem is when that model gets applied to patients who actually need something completely different. And nobody tells them the difference.
So How Do You Know Which One You Are?
You are probably fine with a simpler model if your symptoms are relatively recent and straightforward, you respond well to basic adjustments and feel better for a while afterward, nothing is chronic or recurring, and you mostly just want maintenance care to stay functional.
No judgment at all. That is a real and valid category of patient and there are a lot of you.
You probably need something more when the simple stuff has not worked. When you have been adjusted over and over and keep ending up right back where you started a week later. When your pain is layered, spreading, or doing things that don't make obvious sense. When you have run out of spoons trying to figure out why nothing is sticking. When someone has already told you everything looks normal, but you feel anything but normal.
When you are dealing with EDS, hypermobility, cervical instability, chronic pain that doesn't follow the rules, a sports injury with a pattern nobody has cracked yet, or an auto accident where your symptoms are all over the place and nobody is looking at the full picture.
That second group is who I built my practice around. Not because I think I'm better than other chiropractors. Because that patient needs a completely different approach and I have spent years learning how to actually help them.
The Referral That Surprises People Every Time
I have sent patients to other offices more times than I can count. Walk in models, general practitioners, other chiropractors who are a better fit for what someone needs. Some providers act like that is some kind of professional failure.
I think it is the only honest way to practice.
If you come in and your back is stiff from a long week and there is nothing complicated going on, I am going to tell you that. I am not going to run you through an extensive evaluation, build you a six month plan, and charge you accordingly just because I can.
That is not care. That is business dressed up as care. And patients feel the difference even when they cannot name it.
What Actually Happens When the Care Does Not Match the Patient
Here is where it goes wrong for the complex patients who end up in the wrong place.
You go in with something layered. Maybe it is EDS or hypermobility. Maybe it is a chronic pattern nobody has figured out. Maybe your body just does not respond the way the textbook says it should. You get a standard adjustment protocol. It does not really help. Maybe it makes things worse.
You leave thinking chiropractic does not work for you. Or worse, you leave thinking nothing works for you.
I have heard some version of "I already tried chiropractic and it just jacked me up worse" more times than I can count. And when I dig into what actually happened it becomes clear pretty fast that the approach was not wrong because chiropractic is bad. It was wrong because what that person needed and what they got were two completely different things.
The right care for the wrong patient is still the wrong care.
What We Actually Do for the Patients Who Need More
When someone comes in with chronic pain, hypermobility, instability, recurring injuries, or a history of treatments that have not worked, we slow way down.
We listen to the whole story. Not just the chief complaint. The pattern, the history, what helped even a little, what completely wrecked them, what their nervous system is doing, what their body can actually tolerate right now.
From there we build something specific to that person. FSM for patients whose nervous systems are running on high alert and need something gentle enough that it does not feel like another threat. Shockwave for chronic tissue problems that have stopped responding to everything else. Cold laser and soft tissue work layered in based on what the body actually needs. Stability and movement work that accounts for what is really going on rather than what a standard protocol assumes.
It takes longer. It requires more. But for the patients who need it the difference is not subtle.
The Bottom Line Is Pretty Simple
If you have straightforward symptoms and just want convenient affordable maintenance care, The Joint might genuinely be your best option and I mean that without any sarcasm at all.
If you have tried the simple stuff and it has not worked, if your situation is complicated, if you have been dismissed or misunderstood or told everything looks normal when you feel like your body is completely jacked up, that is a different conversation.
That is the conversation I am here for.
